About Us

Overview

The NSW Super Senior Golf Association Incorporated (SSGA) is a sporting body with objectives to organise and manage the facilitation of Super Senior Golf competitions for male golfers 65 years and older with a registered GA handicap.

The SSGA is managed by an elected committee and is registered with NSW Fair Trading.

The SSGA manages the association autonomously but is affiliated with Golf NSW.

SSGA organises Super Senior Pennant Competition and Annual Championships.

NSW Golf Clubs who are registered in the Pennant competition support the SSGA and its registrants by making their Courses available for pennant play. This is greatly appreciated by the SSGA Committee and registrants.

History

In the beginning: The NSW SS Pennant Competition for male golfers over the age of 65, was conceived during a visit by Barry Ewert of Morisset Golf Club to the USA in 2001. Senior golfers in the USA played in a handicap competition that was known as the Senior Golfing Society.

On his return to Australia, Barry discussed what he had seen with Jim Earl. Jim then approached Brian Webster from the Toukley Golf Club about organising a similar competition on the Central Coast. Brian had a meeting with the Captain of Toukley Golf Club and from there 6 Clubs, namely Toukley, Morisset, Tuggerah Lakes (now Shelly Beach), Wyong, Terrigal and Gosford agreed to form a Super Senior Pennant Championship in 2002.

Timeline Highlights

2002

The Super Senior Pennant Championship (No handicaps) started with six clubs from the Brisbane Waters District and was won by Morisset GC.

2003

Newcastle & Everglades joined in 2003 with two clubs making 10 teams, won by Wyong.

2004

Another three clubs joined from Newcastle in 2004, increasing clubs to thirteen, won by Newcastle G.C.

2005

Nineteen clubs from Sydney joined, making 33 clubs participating in the Pennant Series, played in three areas, namely Sydney Area (four Divisions), Brisbane Waters Area, the Newcastle Division. Newcastle won overall.

2006

2007

Forty-four clubs contested the 2007 Pennant with twenty-seven clubs from Sydney, seven clubs from the Central Coast and ten clubs from Newcastle. The Lakes defeated Monash in the final played at Castle Hill.

2008

Forty-Four clubs again played in the 2008 Pennant. Sydney with twenty-six clubs, Central Coast seven clubs and eleven clubs from Newcastle. The home and away format was used in Sydney but due to club numbers in the Central Coast and Newcastle the old format was used. Belmont overcame Newcastle to win the Pennant played at Horizons.

2009

Wollongong joined Southern Highlands three clubs in 2009 and played the home and away format. A total of forty-nine clubs (51 teams) contested the Pennant, twenty-seven clubs (28 teams) from Sydney, seven clubs (eight teams) from the Central Coast and eleven clubs from Newcastle. Belmont was again Pennant winners beating Newcastle at Wyong.

2014

53 teams entered the SSP Match Play competition. The final was played at Horizons Golf course between Newcastle Golf Club, finalists in 2013, and new Club to the competition, Forster-Tuncurry. The Forster-Tuncurry Club was successful in its first attempt to win the Pennant.

2015

54 teams played in the Pennant in 8 Divisions. 6 Divisions had 7 teams while 2 Divisions had 6 teams. Teams was once again coming from Sydney, Central Coast, Newcastle and the Mid North Coast. At the completion of the Divisional Rounds 16 teams,8 Divisional Winners and 8 Runners up, were placed into the Playoff Draw. Unfortunately, it was not Wyong’ after defeating Forster Tuncurry in semi could not match experienced Lakes GC in the final.

2016

54 teams entered, 6 Division of 7 teams and 2 Divisions of 6 teams. Divisions with 7 teams did not play on their home course but rather hosted the other 6 teams when they had the bye. However, the 2 Division of 6 did play on their home course with no bye present. Forster-Tuncurry beat Cronulla in the final .

During this season the name of the Pennant changed significantly and became an incorporated body under the name of NSW Super Senior Golf Association Incorporated. This established the SSGA as the official body responsible for running our competition.
